Folk Music in Chippenham – Calan on Tour

Calan have had a busy year!  They’ve been locked up in a detainment cell at Chicago airport, been struck by a tornado and been the subject of a House of Commons debate all in one year.  Calan, the band that have been credited for ‘giving folk music a kick up the noughties’, are back in the van on a UK tour this month and hoping for a smoother ride. We’re so pleased they will be playing at the Neeld which is becoming a major venue for folk music in Chippenham.

Following the release of their debut album the folk music band have been playing at concerts and festivals around the UK and Europe including the Interceltique de Lorient in Brittany where they received the award for the best group.

For a taste of their wonderful music, have a look here at them performing at Celtic Connections this year.

The folk music band have attracted four star reviews from the critics with the Daily Mirror saying “…there’s nowt as dear as folk – especially when played with the grace, daring and sheer joy this multi-instrumental five-piece bring to a winning selection of reels, jigs and hornpipes.”

Main stage festival performances have included Cambridge Folk Festival, Shrewsbury and Wickham sharing stages with Katie Tunstall and The Proclaimers and Fairport Convention’s Cropredy Festival playing for 26,000 people all at one time.  And yet Calan took joy in playing a folk club in the south of England in front of a handful of music fans.  Not restricted by a sound system or stage lighting, the band decided to play their final number standing on tables and jumping off chairs.
Calan begin touring parts of Britain in May before heading out for two tours of North America in the autumn.

Calan are playing at the Neeld on 19th May at 7.30pm. Tickets are available from our website or call us on 01249 446699.

The Neeld Community Arts Centre can be found in the heart of Chippenham.  Previously known as The Neeld Hall, it has been a wartime hospital, Corn Exchange and a community hall. As well as live folk music in Chippenham, we host a vast array of entertainment in the town.
